Avocacy

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Amendments of 2008 was passed by Congress in2008.  The new law, effective as of January 1st 1009, contains vital protections for people with Myasthenia Gravis (MG).

The amendmen redefine "disability" and protect people with chronic diseases and disabilities from workplace discrimination.  The courts have narrowed the definition of disability since the ADA was enacted in1990.  As a result, people with chronic conditions, such as MG, who managed their disabilities with medication or other treatment have been viewed as "too functional' to be protected by the ADA.  The new law increases those people's protection by restoring the ADA's original intent.

The amendments were introduced by Steny Hoyer (D-MD) in the House of Representatives as H.R. 3195, and they were approved by a vote of 402 to 17 on June 25th.  Senetors Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) introduced a similar bill (S3406) in the Senate, where it passed by unanimous consent on September 11th and was referred to the House.  S3406 received final House approval by voice vote on September  17th and President Bush signed it into law on September 25t as Public Law 110-325.

Please take a moment to write a thank you note to the Senate and House of Representatives for their support of the ADA.  It is also an opportunity to bring Myasthenia Gravis awareness to politicians.  All names and addresses of politicians/officials are accessible at www.congress.org.  If any of your local officials co-sponsored the amendment, please list thier names in the thank you letter.
